When picking little princess up from her childcare facility I was talking to her teachers about our recent Holiday and my subsequent accident i.e. trying out for the next Wonder Woman movie by flying downhill backwards (look out Linda Carter, I’m on a roll). After telling them how wonderful skiing was, I said that I wanted to go somewhere warm next year as I’m really a warm-blooded person. Meaning that I prefer it sunny and 100 degrees outside don’t get me wrong, snow is great, but really like sand, sunshine and water if I had my druthers. One teacher’s back was to the door when another mom walked in to pick up her darling little baby girl. The mom joined the conversation and we started talking about the warm places we want to visit, like taking a cruise to Mexico, maybe Cabo San Lucas or Cozumel. The other mom said on her visit to Mexico the only thing she remembered is how "greasy" the Mexican’s were. My jaw didn’t drop, but I couldn’t believe that she just said this as I have dark brown hair, green eyes and tan very easy and am pretty sure that there is some greasy Mexican somewhere back there in my heritage. My dad always told us that we were Heinz 57 when we asked about what nationality we were, either that or he called us Mutts. Anyways, that’s not even the point to this story. When the other mom said that, the teacher facing me rolled her eyes at me and stopped talking. Now the other mom proceeded to drop the Greaser comment several more times so I politely changed the subject and gathered up Princess’ stuff. The teacher (who had her back to the door) offered to help me out to the truck with Princess since I’m hobbling along with little metal helpers (crutches). This teacher has a young son and is pregnant with her second child (12 weeks I think) and when we were getting Princess into her car seat, the teacher told me that her husband was from Mexico City and that she just loved visiting there with him as it was lovely. I said that Mexico City was one place that I always wanted to visit and would get there someday. She helped me into the truck and I profusely thanked her for her help and kindness. As I drove away I thought how sad I was for the other mom’s daughter. Not that I think this teacher will intentionally be mean to the baby, it’s just that we are all human and I could tell that she took offense (rightly so) to the Greaser comment. I’m pretty sure that the teacher will take her time in responding when the other baby cries, maybe not hold her as often or fix her bottle as fast. I’m so glad that I wasn’t the one who made the comment and that my daughter won’t have to suffer for it.
