Every day I show up to participate in this life!

The earlier years

When I was in High School, one of my best friends was a pixie of a girl, with dark brown hair and big blue eyes. She was also very well endowed in the front of the shirt area (if you know what I mean). There was this little thing that she did that really frustrated me. She would get bad grades on purpose. I remember the first time it happened, we got our papers back and I looked at hers and ask "Maggie, why did you get a C on that paper – we studied and I know you know this stuff". She blew me off and said that she forgot the answers or something like that. The next time it happened, I questioned her further, because I was certain that she knew the answers as we always studied together. Finally I managed to drag the reason out of her – she said (and I will never forget it) "the boys don’t like it if you are too smart". Huh, my jaw dropped to the ground – I must have been really naïve because I just couldn’t imagine being dumb on purpose, to get the boys to like you and I can’t imagine liking any boy that I’d have to play dumb to get. I didn’t go on a lot of dates in High School, but that is for another blog. Besides that, she was the cutest little pixie and really didn’t have problems in the boyfriend area so I really couldn’t imagine why she would need to play dumb to get a guy. Finally, we started to drift apart and hang with different people. I always thought "what a waste" because she was letting some boy dictate how "smart" she was.  She ended up dropping out of college after her 2nd semester and joining the Coast Guard and part of her job there was running out on deck and snapping the lines onto the helicopters when they landed, because she was such a pixie.  Last I heard she was getting married and then I lost track of her after that.

She had this other habit that I always thought was funny. When she would meet someone new, she would introduce her self by saying "Hi, my name is Maggie, but you can call me Margaret". I would always laugh and think that it was funny because her name was Margaret and we called her Maggie (or Magster). It was years later before I realized that she was really being a bitch by saying this. Maggie - if your out there in blog world - I think about you from time to time and wonder how your life is doing.
