Mr. H is “on-call” this week which means that he doesn’t go into work until about 8 a.m. Usually he reports to work at 7 a.m. and leaves the house in the morning before I wake little Magpie up. Since he goes in later he has been getting up with me and going into Magpie’s room to wake her up because we both love seeing the little turtle head pop up. She sleeps on her tummy and yes, I’m one of those bad mothers that didn’t listen to the assvice of putting your child to sleep on their back. I figured that if tummy sleeping worked for both of my boys (the Stone Age) then it would work for her as well. She sleeps better on her tummy and slept on top of me for the first 3 months of her life. By the time we actually let her sleep in her own crib she was used to sleeping on her stomach so we continued that trend. When we go in there in the morning, she is on her tummy with her knees pulled up under her, butt in the air, and when we pop open the closet door she pops up her little turtle head, rubs her eyes, grabs her blanket and stands up while I’m getting her clothes. It is just the cutest thing to see that little blond head come up above the top of the crib and those lovely little blue eyes blink the sleep out of them. When I walk over to the crib she starts reaching out her arms for me. I grab her (blanket and all) and nuzzle her fuzzy little head as I’m walking into the living room to feed her morning bottle. She is just too cute in the morning and a very happy baby. I nestle her into the crook of my arm and put the bottle into the gaping, hungry little bird mouth. She snuggles against me, closes her eyes and starts playing with her hair while she eats breakfast, the blanket up against her face. The funny thing about this week is the routine is the same, except if Mr. H. talks while she is eating her eyes pop wide open, she starts grinning like a possum and says Da da with milk running out the corner of her mouth (and consequently on my shirt). She then starts twisting and squirming in my arms so that she can grin at her dad. I end up having to place her back against my chest so that she is facing out into the room to finish the bottle because she knows dad is there and wants to see him. This is why people have more than one child – to capture the innocence.
